That ugly exclamation rattled the ears of editor Michael Luo who, with family and friends in tow, headed to get lunch at a nearby Korean restaurant on the Upper East Side streets of Manhattan last month. Luo wrote an open letter in the New York Times to the white woman who roared it, telling her how such verbal daggers sever Asian-Americans from their citizenship. Neither is it racist to say that when it comes to wider child abuse nearly 90 per cent of those convicted and on the sex offenders register are white men. Achieving justice was a painful experience and far from easy for these victims and thus the sentences given should be far from easy for these vulgar criminals. However, I have been deeply disturbed by the coverage of the convictions, and how it has been painted as predominantly an issue of race, and not male-led sexual exploitation of vulnerable women. On Monday, the last day of April , Issa Rae was trending on Twitter because of what she wrote about black women and Asian men in her book three years ago. As far as I know, the following happened. She came to a tongue-in-cheek conclusion that black women and Asian men should therefore get together.
She might also hear the same phrase if she happens to reject a South Asian man romantically, even if race has not played a part in her decision. And, why are black people used by Asian men who are unable to grapple with rejection or criticism thrown their way? To them, the woman is airing her dirty laundry internal community discussion is expected to stay internal. I find that behaviour disgusting.
